Hey there!

Let's start building your vocabulary for the TOEIC test with an overview of the grammar and vocabulary skills you'll need to master TOEIC PART 1.

TOEIC PART 1 consists of 6 questions.
For each question, you'll have to look at a photo and listen to 4 suggestions. You'll have to choose which of these 4 suggestions corresponds to the photo.
Here's an example of a photo and the proposals that might be associated with it.
(Please note: in the real test, the suggestions are not written down. )

In this example, the correct proposal is B.
The difficulty with Part 1 is that often, each proposition includes elements that can be seen in the photo, which can mislead candidates. For example, the word “headset” in proposition C or the word “keyboard” in proposition D.
That's why it's so important to know the conjugation forms used in Part 1, as well as the most frequently used verbs of action, movement and position.

Conjugation forms in TOEIC PART 1

The present continuous: BE + _ING

Sentences describing a person's actions or movements are usually in the present continuous tense.

For example:

Cyclists are riding by a fountain.

She's removing papers from a file.

The people are walking up a staircase.

The present simple passive voice : IS/ARE + Past participle

Sentences describing the current position of objects ore people are generally in the present simple passive voice.

For example:

Some cars are parked side by side.

A display case is located near the steps.

Some people are gathered around a market stand.

The present perfect passive voice: HAVE/HAS BEEN + Past participle

Sentences describing where some objects or people have been placed are usually in the present perfect passive voice.

For example:

Information has been posted by the entrance.

Flowerpots have been hung above a patio.

A cabinet has been stocked with supplies.

The present continuous passive voice: IS/ARE BEING + _ING

Sentences describing an action in progress are in the continuous passive form.

For example:

Some grass is being cut.

A monitor is being mounted in a wall.

Files are being stored on shelves.

Pro tip: To familiarize yourself with these verbs, practice putting them into sentences.
